Our take
Acrylic is denser, crisper-engraved, and can be layered for coloured backs; melamine is lighter, washable and a third of the all-in price once racks enter the maths. Weekly players who host at home tend to land acrylic eventually; clubs, classrooms and first sets are melamine's natural home. Long version: our materials guide.
